Lithium-Ion Polymer Batteries
In 1999, several manufacturers commercially introduced lithium ion polymer batteries. Unlike lithium ion batteries, which must be housed in a metal container, typically in a disc, cylindrical or rectangular form, lithium polymer batteries are produced as thin sheets that can be folded, stacked or otherwise shaped to fit the battery container, and can be contained in a metal-lined plastic pouch. Otherwise, lithium ion polymer batteries have performance characteristics similar to lithium ion batteries. Since their introduction, lithium ion polymer batteries have been used in some premium mobile telephones and other wireless devices.

Lithium-Ion Polymer Batteries have the following advantages:

Very Low Profile -- batteries that resemble the profile of a credit card are feasible.
Flexible Form Factor -- manufacturers are not bound by standard cell formats. With high volume, any reasonable size can be produced economically.
Light Weight -- gelled rather than liquid electrolytes enable simplified packaging, in some cases eliminating the metal shell.
Improved Safety -- more resistant to overcharge; less chance for electrolyte leakage.

Energy Density (watt hours per liter)
Nickel cadmium 150
Nickel metal hydride 190
Lithium ion 250
Lithium ion polymer 250

*Current Technology may Increase Energy Density

Another feature of the Lithium-Polymer batteries is that  they can be charged using the same charging electronics that were designed for NiMH and Lithium Ion batteries. As long as the charge rate falls within the specified range, there should be no problem. So upgrading from NiMH or Lithium Ion to Lithium-Polymer can be done either by the OEM or by the end user.
